ATK on Holland America

Holland America Line introduces culinary education offerings in a new relationship with the long-running public television show America's Test Kitchen (ATK).

Debuting in October on the Westerdam, and later rolling out fleet-wide, the Culinary Arts Center on Holland America Line ships is being redone as a replica of the TV show's set. Shipboard chefs are also being trained by America's Test Kitchen culinary experts to host new in-depth cooking demonstrations in the theater, as well as hands-on classes for passengers.

"They really pride themselves as food scientists. The analogy I like to use is theConsumer Reports for food," Holland America Line president Orlando Ashford told USA TODAY. "Our guests will benefit as foodies from the research."

  • Join your America’s Test Kitchen host for any of eight 45-minute cooking shows and four 90-minute hands-on workshops created especially for our guests.
  • Learn new culinary skills and advanced techniques for creating perfect pies and handmade pasta, decorating cakes and whipping up delicious egg dishes.
  • Enhance your culinary knowledge with a cooking demonstration, engaging videos and recipes on everything from chocolate desserts to Asian dumplings.

"It's not just learning a recipe," Ashford said. "The experts have researched what's the best way to make x and done the testing and determined what's the best equipment and put the rigor into it so that the guest can learn to make the best beef stroganoff or whatever the dish is."

Holland America Line passengers will also have 24-hour access to America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country on their stateroom TVs.

For more than 20 years, America's Test Kitchen has inspired home cooks with their science-based approach to creating delicious, foolproof recipes.

NYC Airport Update

As you may or may not know. New York's LaGuardia airport (LGA) has begun a four-year, $4-billion-dollar redevelopment program to completely reshape the airport. The existing LGA terminal services almost 15 million travelers annually.

As LaGuardia has little public transportation, traveling to the airport has already become a trying experience for many. Last week, there were several days where it was taking two to four hours to reach the terminals, causing some travelers to ditch rental cars and walk several miles to the airport. Many carriers have been advising travelers to give themselves four hours to travel from Manhattan to the airport. Even Uber was refusing rides to or from the airport.

Also, because many travelers are arriving late for their flights, time-balanced security checkpoints are backing up, causing more angst for travelers.

If you are (or are considering) flying into or out of New York's LaGuardia, please visit to stay on top of any last-minute changes to roads, parking, pick up and drop off areas and cell phone lots. From there, you can also sign up to receive emailed alerts. If you, or someone you know, travel to LGA often, I suggest you sign up for these alerts.

Additionally, the New York Port Authority has begun construction on the main roadway into New York's JFK Airport as well. For JFK, they are suggesting people drop off at an JFK AirTrain station versus attempting to drive into the airport.

Remember, Newark (EWR) is a viable alternative.

Staying Safe During Travel

Enjoy Vacationing wants every client to travel smart and safe. While we hope you never need these tips, it's worth knowing they are available. We strongly recommend all clients traveling internationally to sign up for the STEP program and register each country you are visiting. Here are 6 travel safety tips you may not be aware of:

1. The STEP program
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Travelers then receive important information about safety conditions in the destination country, and helps the U.S. Embassy, as well as their family and friends, contact them in an emergency.

TIP: First-time users should create a bio online. After that, travelers simply only need to load their travel information, or their travel agent can enroll them.

2. Travel alerts and travel warnings
Most people are generally aware that the U.S. government issues alerts and warnings, but it’s helpful to know the difference. Travel Warnings are issued when the U.S. government wants travelers to strongly consider whether they should be traveling to a country at all. They are issued for reasons like an unstable government, civil war, ongoing intense crime or violence, or frequent terrorist attacks.

Travel Alerts are issued when there are short-term events individuals should know about when planning travel to a country, including strikes, demonstrations, or disturbances; a health alert like an outbreak of zika; or evidence of an elevated risk of terrorist attacks.

3. Security and emergency messages
U.S. embassies frequently issue messages via the State Department’s blog regarding events like demonstrations that might impact travel to a given city. TIP: Save the URL on your smartphone.

4. Aid in case of arrest or detention
The state department will contact family, friends and/or employers of a detained U.S. citizen with their written permission. It will visit the detained citizen regularly and provide reading materials and vitamin supplements, where appropriate; ensure prison officials are providing appropriate medical care; and provide a general overview of the local criminal justice process.

The Dept. of State also can establish an “OCS Trust” so friends and family can transfer funds to imprisoned U.S. citizens, when permissible under prison regulations

5. Aid to victims of crime
Consular officers, agents and staff can help crime victims deal with local police and medical systems, as well as stay in touch with family members.

6. Country-specific information
The State Department website offers a profile of every country in the world, including information about safety and security, local health issues, vaccination requirements, currency restrictions and aviation safety. It includes any current travel alerts or warnings issued about that country.

Celebrity Escapes

Time-pressed world travelers can now explore the most idyllic islands of the Caribbean during a weekend getaway

Back by popular demand, Celebrity Cruises is reintroducing quick escapes to the Caribbean, giving time-crunched vacationers the opportunity to visit tropical ports-of-call in modern luxury style and experience the Celebrity Distinction.

"Our discerning guests have told us they want Celebrity's modern luxury vacations in the Caribbean and expressed an incredible level of excitement for the shorter itineraries we've offered in the past," explained Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises. "We listened and decided to reintroduce these coveted sailings where ease, convenience, relaxation and modern luxury coexist, while sailing to some of the most celebrated ports in the Caribbean onboard the beautiful Celebrity Summit."

Vacationers can choose from four and five night sailings from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., onboard Celebrity Summit to highly sought-after ports of call, including Key West, Fla.; Nassau, Bahamas; and Cozumel, Mexico:

Four-Night Getaways:
The four-night sailings make for the perfect extended-weekend getaway. Guests will bask in the island breeze of Nassau, Bahamas, enjoy the modern luxury amenities Celebrity Summit has to offer during a day at sea, and unwind in the island paradise, Key West, Fla. — and still be back in time for work on Monday morning.

Five-Night Mini-Escapes:
The five-night sailings afford guests more opportunities to experience the distinct culinary delights and world-class offerings onboard Celebrity Summit, with two days at sea, before experiencing the rich heritage of Cozumel, Mexico, and the laid back vibe of Key West, Fla. Guests return home on Thursday with a three-day weekend still ahead of them.

Extended Caribbean Vacations:
For vacationers yearning for a slightly longer getaway, Celebrity Summit will also offer two seven-night repositioning sailings from San Juan to Ft. Lauderdale, and a return sailing from Ft. Lauderdale to San Juan, with stops in some of the most exotic sought-after ports of call, such as the sun-soaked islands of Aruba, Curacao and St. Maarten.

Celebrity's new mini escapes are available for booking now for travel beginning in early 2018 and during spring break and Easter.

Following the Ft. Lauderdale season, Celebrity Summit will return to its original homeport of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Celebrity Summit is captained by charismatic duo Alex Papadopoulos and Kate McCue, the first American female cruise ship captain in the industry, who alternate every three months

New Ships on Order

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has signed an agreement to build three new ships. One will be a fifth Oasis class ship for Royal Caribbean and two will be third and fourth Edge class ships for Celebrity.

The news follows the launch of Royal Caribbean’s new Harmony of the Seas, the biggest cruise ship in the world at 227,000 tons and a capacity of 5,479 guests. A fourth Oasis-class ship was planned and is currently under construction at the shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France. Already the third is slightly larger than the first Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, and by the time the fifth comes along, it could very well be larger still. The fourth is planned for delivery in spring 2018, and the fifth is pending for spring 2021.

"The response to the arrival of Harmony of the Seas is staggering, eliciting excitement from eager cruisers from markets on both sides of the Atlantic," said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International added, “The Oasis-class ships have delivered beyond expectations each time. Harmony of the Seas' warm reception is evidence that growing this class of ship will continue to drive exceptional performance for the brand.”

Additionally, Celebrity Cruises now has a total of four Edge-class new-builds on its horizon – two for sure planned for fall 2018 and early 2020 and now another two potentially for fall 2021 and fall 2022. Few details have been released about these new ships beyond that they will be sized between the line’s existing Millennium-class and Solstice-class, at 117,000 tons and 2,900 guests each.

New Princess Ships

Princess Cruises is expecting delivery of two new cruise ships in 2019 and 2020. These ships will be the fourth and fifth Royal class ships to be introduced along with sister ships Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess, scheduled to launch summer 2017 in Asia.

The yet to be named 3,560 passenger ships will include princess stapes such as Movies under the stars and balconies in 80% of the staterooms. Princess will also reveal new to the line features and the home bases for the ships.

The line's parent company, Carnival Corp., and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. has 16 ships scheduled for delivery between 2016 and 2020.

"We are incredibly proud and excited to add two new ships to our already formidable fleet," said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. "With this new ship commitment Princess Cruises will continue to grow and expand globally as the world's destination leader in premium cruising."
